School of Chemistry, Biology, and Material Science

School of Chemistry, Biology, and Material Science (CBMS) was founded in 1959 and consists of four departments: Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Department of Material Science and Engineering, and Department of Biotechnology. The school offersone doctoral program in Geological Resources and Engineering (Research Direction of Nuclear Waste Treatment and Disposal), three master programs in Chemistry, Material Science and Engineering, and five bachelor programs in Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Material Science and Engineering, Materials Chemistry, and Biotechnology. Chemistry is named as the top-leveldiscipline and supportedby Jiangxi government, while Radiochemistry is ranked as the co-established specialty with the Defense Science and Technology Bureau.

Staff

There are 149 faculty members in our school, with 103 of them possessing doctorate degrees. Four of our instructors with doctorate degrees are foreigners. We have 26 professors including one National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation Project winner. We also have three provincial level science and technology innovation groups: the Advanced Polymer Materials and Processing Group, the Mass Spectrometry Science and Instruments Group, and the Nuclear Chemistry and Nuclear Fuel Technology Group.

Talent Cultivation

To fulfill the objective of cultivating practical talents for serving local economic and industrial construction, we adhere to the education principle of Qualification Priority” to cultivate talents with a solid theoretical foundation, wide range of knowledge, and strong practical and innovative abilities. To fully take advantage of teachers’ scientific research, we encourage students to participate in research and extracurricular innovation activities to construct the model of “Learning – Research – Competition”. We instruct students to combine theoretical knowledge with cognitive practice, production practice, and graduation practice. Our graduates are involved in research, engineering design, production management and market development in the fields of chemical industry, energy, material, environmental protection, biopharmaceuticals, and light industry.

Facilities

Our school has established a sound teaching-research platform with discipline specialties, owning an IEAE Reference Laboratory, a provincial Key Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry Science and Instruments, and a provincial Key Laboratory of Polymer Micronanofabrication and Devices. With these key laboratories being valued at 40 million Yuan, our school is rated as National Discipline Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Base (111 program), International Joint Center for Mass Spectrometry Science and Instruments and National Intelligence Demonstration Unit. Besides the on-campus facilities, we have also founded more than 20 teaching practice bases in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Hunan.

Research

Our school has made prominent researchachievements in terms of research projects grants, research awards and conference hosting. We have undertaken 11 national major and key research projects within the latest five years, and about 40 national and ministerial programs with 79 million Yuan of research funds. Our lecturers and professors have been awarded several provincial scientific achievements and have been granted 20 patents. Annually, the research funds per capita amounts to 181,000 Yuan. Moreover, 16 national and international conferences were hosted in our school recently.

International Exchange

We have actively engaged in the international exchange by fostering research collaboration and exchange of teachers in America, Russia, and Canada. We have collaborated with some first-tier universities from around the world by inviting their noted experts and scholars to lecture in our school. These institutions include Lakehead University, University of Bath, the University of Sydney, and St Petersburg University. Recently, we have undertaken International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA)training programs for international trainees.

Achievements

Our school has made great achievements in talent cultivation, student research and social service. Our students have achieved excellence in different national multi-disciplinary competitions. Moreover, they have published more than 50 academic papers and have been granted over 30 patents by actively participating in teachers research projects. In regards to social service, many outstanding alumni have good reputations in their professions.
